TELESCOPE ENVIRONMENT FOR THE ESO VLT Fionn Murtagh Space Telescope { European Coordinating Facility { European Southern Observatory (A liated to Astrophysics Division, Space Science Department, European Space Agency) and Marc Sarazin European Southern Observatory, D-85748 Garching, Germany November 21, 1995 ABSTRACT We use extensive seeing and low-atmosphere meteorological data obtained at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla complex in Chile, and at the site of the Very Large Telescope at Cerro Paranal which is currently under construction. Predictability of good seeing would allow appropriate instrumentation to be mounted in time, to make best use of the observing conditions. In line with aviationrelated prediction, we have been led in the short-term to cast this problem into nowcasting terms, rather than forecasting. A prototype system is set up to nowcast seeing values, given knowledge of the low-atmosphere meteorological environment. Correspondence analysis is used to investigate seasonal variation: in particular we seek to know what environmental variables are most important for determining seeing. Following this, a system based on fuzzy set theory (used in order to facilitate interpretation of the results) is used to determine possibilities of good seeing. Temperature prediction would permit air conditioning in the telescope enclosure to be preset as a function of the next night's minimum expected temperature. We report results of prediction of univariate temperature measurements. These were obtained using a nonparametric (nearest neighbor) method, which we contrast to another non-parametric model (multilayer perceptron) and to an autoregressive model with exogenous inputs. Nowcasting Astronomical Seeing: A Study of ESO La Silla and Paranal
Weuse extensive seeing and low-atmospheremeteorological data obtained at the European Southern Observatory’s La Silla complex in Chile, and at the proposed site of the Very Large Telescope atCerro Paranal. The differences in seeing between these two locations are studied. A prototype system is set up for predicting seeing values, given knowledge of the meteorological environment. A novel patter...
متن کاملThe Prediction of Seeing and Other Relevant Climatological Conditions
The aim of exible scheduling is to improve the quality of observations and to guarantee eecient use of telescope time. Flexible scheduling implies the necessity of accurate forecasts and nowcasts (the latter term, widely used in aviation, implies near real-time analysis). The Astronomical Site Monitor (ASM) will constitute an interface between the VLT observer and the local environment. Seeing ...

The VST (VLT Survey Telescope) is a 2.6 m Alt-Az telescope to be installed at Mount Paranal in Chile, in the European Southern Observatory (ESO) site. The VST is a wide-field imaging facility planned to supply databases for the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) science and carry out stand-alone observations in the UV to I spectral range. This paper will focus mainly on control software aspects, de...

The European Southern Observatory's planned Astronomical Weather Station for the Very Large Telescope which is currently under construction at Cerro Paranal in Chile includes (i) advance temperature prediction, which would permit air conditioning in the telescope enclosure to be preset as a function of the next night's expected temperature; and (ii) prediction of seeing, a few hours in advance,...

We present computer simulations of interferometric imaging with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Astronomical MultiBEam Recombiner (AMBER) phase-closure instrument. These simulations include both the astrophysical modelling of a stellar object by radiative transfer calculations and the simulation of light propagation from the obje...
